Far From the Madding Crowd

Bathsheba Everdene is beautiful and headstrong and is striving to prove herself an independent woman in a man’s world.  She soon catches the eye of Gabriel Oak a sheep farmer, captivated by her wilful spirit.  Her life takes a dramatic turn when she inherits her uncle’s farm and is soon receiving the attentions of two further potential suitors. This timeless story explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.

Hardy set his book in the rural south west England, showing the often harsh, realities of a farming community in Victorian England.
